Visual Media - Rewriting known truths
Many people believe that penetration of television and other visual media has spoiled this generation of people. It has some facts but more fiction. Television is the biggest revolution of mankind, in terms of impact on society, if I may say it.
The ability to transmit moving image across the word for people to see and believe. If light can travel faster than sound, so do the moving image we see travel faster into the brain and take its place before what we hear. So in this sense visuals media influence people like never before. But at the same time the facts which influence the people through these visual media are not the creation of media itself.
Crimes, Exploitation, harassment, corruption are all as old as mankind. But the difference is earlier these activities were not known beyond a certain boundaries but now the visuals as transmitted across the word for people to believe. So media has only exposed the existence of these to the world.
Existence of duality, everything has two sides. People at the same time exploit the potential of the media and show things which should not be shown at all. Politicians show up the scripted acts, reality shows which encashed the human emotions exploit the greed, need for fame and money.
I myself has immensely benefitted from this visual media. Followed them in a positive which helped me to get a picture of places I have never visited, understood the science and technology of human created machines an designs which I have never seen in naked eyes.
Also been exposed to news of human marries animals and sexual relationship between father and daughter which I wouldn't have noticed or remember if read in paper but still alive in memory as seen the news in moving visuals.
You read and you understand but you see and you feel. Visual media helps you to "feel" the information and any feeling needs to be handled with discretion.

Very interseting. I agree with your thought to some extend, but still i feel that penetration of visual media has spoiled the new generation.
ReplyDeleteAs you rightly said, this visual media has concreated the imgage into our thoughts and 90% of the thoughts which are shown in visual media are negative .(news channels talks abt Crime, Exploitation, harassment, corruption , serials are again no less)
